Is there really no place like home?

We were driving through the Flint Hills of Kansas yesterday. Isn’t it beautiful?

Maybe you do this too……read on.

There are homes in this picture. You can’t see them well from this view but I assure you they are there. We drove down several lovely country roads while driving to and from this location. The views were just stunning, I’m not exaggerating. And as usual, I love seeing the homes on these acreages. On absolutely serene looking acreages that just scream “Perfect Life”. Do you know what I’m talking about? I look at these homes and think how awesome it would be to live there.

So….do you dream and imagine and envy a bit on drives like this? Like I do?

I even let myself mentally walk through the home, looking out at the perfect landscape. But you know what I’m really looking for? More than a home. I’d love a place with no sadness. A place with no meanness. A place with no physical sickness or mental illness. A place with no pain. A place with no ugliness or wars or political insanity. A better world.

I believe you might understand.

You and I both know there is no “Perfect Life”. Not in any stick and brick home. Not in any big old RV or van down by the river. 😁

Not here. Not now. But let me give you some really good news. All of the above, all of the above, is temporary. The home, the pain, the sickness, it’s all temporary. And you and I are also…. temporary.

Our bodies are temporary, with the aches and pains, heartache and tears. But we’re going to live forever.

Eternity. Our last breath, the last beat of our hearts can open up the door to a perfect home. Heaven.

God placed a longing for eternity in our hearts when he created us. The older I get, the stronger the longing. For heaven.

Maybe you have a vague uneasiness when you think about “eternity”. If you believe Jesus and trust him with your life, no worries. Heaven is waiting. The most commonly known scripture assures it. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Life is good. Life in this imperfect, broken world is still good. But eternal life in heaven? “Good” is a really anemic word to use. I’m not sure there is a word powerful or profound enough to describe just how amazing our home in heaven will be.

To answer the question in the title, “is there really no place like home?”. The answer is yes, if heaven is your home.

While you and I wait for heaven here are some really encouraging words:

We have troubles all around us, but we are not defeated. We do not know what to do, but we do not give up the hope of living. We are persecuted, but God does not leave us. We are hurt sometimes, but we are not destroyed. So we do not give up. Our physical body is becoming older and weaker, but our spirit inside us is made new every day. We have small troubles for a while now, but they are helping us gain an eternal glory that is much greater than the troubles. We set our eyes not on what we see but on what we cannot see. What we see will last only a short time, but what we cannot see will last forever.
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭4:8-9, 16-18‬ ‭NCV‬‬

Home. Forever.

  1. Well stated, Simply B. I am in the autumn of my life now, at least I hope so, and understand well what you’re talking about. It’s wonderful to see such hills in Kansas! My wife and I travel West on I-70, to visit our sons, and it’s flatter than a pancake! Blessings to you and yours.

    1. Thank you, David. There are many gorgeous hills in Kansas. Even western Kansas has some serious beauty but you gotta exit off I-70. Hope your Sunday is blessed with everything you need to make your Monday and upcoming week great!
